Al-Hayya: We Prefer Joint National List for Elections

Mar 12, 2021 11:49 am

Khalil Al-Hayya, member in Hamas’ Political Bureau, told Al-Quds local newspaper that the Movement is ready to form a joint, national list with the Palestinian factions; and considers this as the best choice suitable for handling the status quo. This would help in ending the division and moving forward with full agreement. He said that Hamas is ready for all possibilities and has scenarios for each of them.

Al-Hayya stressed that it is the nation’s best interest to form one government that encompasses everyone and functions properly in the West Bank, Al-Quds and Gaza; as the PLO leads the political scene and the resistance.

He also said that the Cairo dialogue after mid-March will examine the undertaking of an electoral law for the National Council, the decision on the number of its members, the supervision over the elections, the formation of an election court, and the selection of countries where the elections will be conducted and areas where it would not be possible to.

Regarding the existing concerns over the resumption of division due to elections, Al-Hayya said that such concerns are misplaced because once a legislative council has been elected and a national-unity government has been formed, there will be more room for unity.

Al-Hayya said that the elections in Al-Quds are a redline, one that cannot be crossed. If the occupation dares to intervene, then the elections in Al-Quds will become an electoral-political battle against the occupation. An agreement should be reached, he said, on the best way to conduct the elections in Al-Quds.
