International Rejection of Activist Banat Murder

The killing of the Palestinian politician and candidate for Legislative Council Nizar Banat was vastly condmend by international authorities, UN institutes and human rights centers. Banat was killed after a PA security force broke into his house.

The EU Representative Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff said that he felt shocked and sad for the death of Banat after his arrest and that a full, transparent investigation should begin immediately.

Tor Wennsland, UN Special Coordinator, expressed his shock upon the death of Banat and called for immediate investigation and bringing the criminals to justice.

The Euro-Med Humanitarian Rights Monitor also demanded a serious and immediate investigation that looks into the incident. It pointed out to how Banat was directly shot at on May 1 during the preparations for the Legislative Council elections and his family survived the accident.

Omar Qarout, Coordinator of Rights Institutes Compound, said that the security bodies' treatment to activist Banat was illegal and beyond their jurisdiction. Their main aim is to protect the Palestinian citizens, protect their rights and enforce the law.

A demonstration in Ramallah was held against the killing of Banat and demanded the dissolution of the PA and President Abbas' resignation. However, the security forces dispersed the demonstrators and fired teargas at them causing many to suffocate.
