Knesset Approves Act of Limitations on Term Length of PM

Nov 23, 2021 09:09 am

Channel 13 reported that the Israeli Knesset approved a law draft that limits the term length of the prime minister, submitted by Gideon Sa’ar. According to the law, the Knesset member that serves as the prime minister for 8 years, consecutively or not, cannot nominate himself again. Hence, the day he ends his 8th year, the government will be resigned and measures will start to establish a new government.

However, this does not apply to those who were in position before the adaptation of this law. Thus, Benjamin Netanyahu is allowed to nominate himself to serve as the prime minister for another 8 years.

The chief of the Yesh Atid party and Yair Lapid, Israel’s Foreign Minister, said that it's incorrect for the Israeli democracy to let one person serve for more than 8 years as this leads to corruption, as what happened with Benjamin Netanyahu.

Benny Gantz, the minister of defense, welcomed the law draft and said that they need such a law for protection.
