The Future of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)

The Security Generals’ assembly was held on the fourth of September, 2020. Perhaps Fatah had hoped this would renew the legitimacy of its leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization, but the poll was held on Hamas’ methodology instead. It was determined that a committee for the leadership of the popular resistance would be formed. Although they all agreed on popular resistance, no one dared to mentioned peaceful solutions. What is, then, the future of the PLO amidst the changes in the region and who will lead this national project?

PLO’s Program

After the Israeli occupation had destroyed any hopes of settlement with the Palestinian people through the implementation of the Israeli-American plan (Deal of the Century) and initiation of normalization with Arabs, the Palestinian Authority is facing three possible futures: it will be dissolved, terminated and shifted into a security entity, or destroyed after a full-scale Intifada.

Whatever happens, it only means the end of the PLO and Fatah’s program, which is based on the concept of reaching a settlement. As a result, the Palestinian factions will follow Hamas, which is the most dynamic among the factions and strongly adheres to the resistance and Palestinian rights. Unlike Fatah, it is also more integrated into the Palestinian people and other Arab and Muslim peoples.

Difficult Choice

Hamas’ leadership of the national project will be preceded by a difficult test. The ideology of its program make it in rivalry with four parties: The PA, which as we mentioned will have been terminated, the Israeli occupation, the US Administration and the Arab countries that have normalized with the occupation. Most likely, these parties will turn to military in order to silence Hamas with force.

The five weeks given for the implementation of the Assembly’s decisions are very essential. Will Fatah actually do what was agreed on?

This is probably not going to happen because Fatah is internally divided into several powers. Abbas' departure will only expose the cracks in the structure of the movement. Of course, this meeting can only be a cover to show that the Organization and Fatah care about the Palestinian cause when, in fact, it is part of a bigger plan to annihilate the resistance.

Generally, in the coming future Hamas will work at three levels as Haniya pointed to some in his speech during the meeting: Hamas will

  • Further integrate itself into the Palestinian people inside and outside Palestine, and Haniya’s visit to Lebanon is within the same context.
  • Activate the resistance along with the rest of the factions, with or without Fatah.
  • Communicate with the Muslim nation as Haniya has recently visited Turkey. It is important to strengthen the relations with the member states of the Kuala Lumpur Summit as well.
