The American Landscape as Popular Riots Continue

Jun 04, 2020 10:00 am

The killing of African-American George Floyd on May 25 was not the only reason behind enraging the people of the USA. It is, however, the USA’s long history of racism and discrimination, as described by NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, and its failure to face the Coronavirus.

The popular protests which are rising in the US demonstrate the people’s rage against racism, marginalization and failure to manage the country’s affairs. Floyd was not the first to die as black Americans are more exposed to death due to the Coronavirus. In Washington, the death rate of the black Americans reached 50% and the unemployment rate reached 14.7%. More than 20 million jobs were lost in last April only.

Possible Scenarios

In light of the USA’s status quo, there are three possible scenarios:

Protests End

If the protests end, it means the demonstrators failed to achieve their demands. According to observers, this scenario is expected because the demonstrations lack a unified leadership that could direct the people’s rage in the correct direction, and specific demands.

However, others see that the demonstrations have reached the no-return point as this is the third week of protests and they are spreading very quickly across America. In fact, the black and the white are participating side by side and they have identified their demands under general guidelines. They are against racism and are calling for better social and economic conditions for the American society as a whole.

It is unexpected for the protesters to back down. They were not satisfied with the mere conviction of the police officers. This is, as some believe, their last chance for justice. Democrats, of course, will not miss this opportunity in order to topple their rival; especially that Bidden is ahead of Trump (54% VS 44%) in a poll by the Washington Post.

Protests Succeed

This means the US Administration would submit to the demands of the protestors, admit its mistakes and its injustice towards the black Americans, and improve the living conditions of the black people. LA Municipality already started and allocated a part of its budget for the black community.

Taking into consideration Trump’s mentality, this is unlikely to happen since the peaceful protestors were met with violence and were continuously threatened.

If the US Administration continues to use force with the protestors, this would encourage the Democrats to reopen the impeachment case against Trump. Should this attempt fail, Trump’s chances of winning would increase. Should it succeed, the republican senates’ position would be the main influential factor.

Military Intervenes

Although the intervention of the army would be a very dangerous move, it is still likely to happen. The police has failed to contain the demonstrations, so using the army would be Trump’s final card to show up as a strong president who contains internal crises as he does with external ones.

However, if this actually happens, the American community’s bonds and national institutions would be greatly affected. This would also limit Trump’s winning chances in the coming elections.

Finally, if the peaceful protest continues in the USA and the American parties and institutions continue to support it, Trump will exit the White House through the coming elections. It is not in the favor of the US democratic prestige that the army intervenes and heads to the streets.
