The ugly scenes, racist songs and violence that appeared during the Jerusalem Day celebrations must have raised the event's organizers' concern since the start. This day has turned into a festival for a specific, trivial and political sector, and the responsibility for that lies with those who portray it in this manner.

Those who accept the presence of fringe groups like "La Familia" or "Hill Youth" also endorse their behavior. Those who promote the organizers but fail to give them any instructions to stop any form of racism betray their public duty. Those who insist on the march passing through the Damascus Gate and the Islamic Quarter must realize their responsibility.

What is happening in Jerusalem is a sad and prolonged process of secularists fleeing and the religious gaining strength. When the arena in the Western Wall turns into a clear site for the Haredies with the organizers imposing extremist behavior, it is not surprising that it takes on an extremist nature. The current form of the Flag March is almost a political demonstration, and marching in a united manner is provocative, much like the marches of Ben-Gvir in Kafr Qasim or the protesters against conscription in Bnei Brak.

Those who are interested in rallying tens of thousands of people to march in the Islamic Quarter must bear the responsibility for the image that will emerge from there and the behavior of the participants. Those who choose to ignore these fringe elements in an event they organized contribute to making Jerusalem Day the worst day in the city.
