When the law to cancel the pretext of rationality reached its last phase last week, all other discussions about Israel being democratic were excluded.
If a foreign citizen was found at the protests in the last two weeks, they would have assumed that democracy in Israel, until yesterday (Monday), was at its peak. However, with the approval of the law, democracy became clouded and at risk of erosion. Israel has always been democratic for Jews, with discrimination against Palestinians and suppression of their rights. The passage of the law signifies further contraction, not only of the pretext of rationality but also of the limited space that was preserved for minorities and Palestinians within Israeli democracy. It closes the theoretical window of opportunity to turn to the Israeli judiciary in hopes of finding occasional relief.
It is true that several civil society organizations attempted to bring the occupation issue into the surface and discuss the absence of personal security and escalating violence within the Palestinian arena inside the protests. However, these attempts continue to decrease as long as protests persist.
In case they want to preserve the occupation entity at the 9th of August, they must realize that there are people who are no Jewish and want to live in real peace, security and stability. In order to assure that, they must be heard and their messages must be understood. It is also necessary to talk about their serious problems instead of overlooking them. If we want to save the house, we have to protect it all, not just the Jewish house.
