Catastrophic Water Shortage in Gaza

The Gaza Municipality stated that with the rise in temperatures and the increasing need for water among residents and displaced people, the city is experiencing catastrophic conditions due to the destruction of around 75% of its water wells by the Israeli occupation since October 2023, and the lack of fuel to operate the remaining wells.

The municipality confirmed that the currently available water supply does not exceed 35,000 cubic meters per day, compared to 120,000 cubic meters that were pumped during similar periods before the aggression. This amount is extremely low compared to the city's actual needs.

It pointed out that this supply is distributed as follows:

  • Around 20,000 cubic meters from Mekorot (the Israeli water company),

  • 15,000 cubic meters produced by municipal wells that operate for very limited hours due to fuel and electricity shortages,

  • In addition to small amounts from private wells.
