The spokesman for Gaza Municipality, Husni Muhaana, stated that the city is confronting a suffocating water crisis as a result of the ongoing war, blockade, fuel shortages and the destruction of vital infrastructure, all of which have worsened health and environmental catastrophe.
Muhanna explained that the water supply deficit has reached 76% compared to the actual need. He added that only 24,000 cubic meters of water are being pumped into the distribution network, while the daily requirement stands at 100,000 cubic meters. He also noted that only 19 out of the city’s 96 wells are currently operational.
He emphasized the urgent need for immediate fuel to operate water wells, pumping stations, sewage systems, in addition to spare parts to repair damaged networks and replace pipes and transformers.
Muhanna warned of the increasing risk of water contamination and overcrowding in limited areas, which could lead to the spread of waterborne diseases and epidemics, posing a serious threat to the lives of residents, especially children.
