Azzam Al-Ahmed, member in Fatah's Central Committee, said in a solidarity campaign in Ramallah that the national liberation movements do not carry out elections under occupation except for once in history. If it were not for the death of President Yasser Arafat, the 2006 elections would not have been conducted.
He also said that a one-time agreement for a transitory phase still stands, but conducting elections again under the occupation means the recognition of the occupation's legality.
Al-Ahmed emphasized that Oslo Accords ended when the occupation did since the Second Camp David and its rejection of Al-Aqsa Intifada. Ever since, the PA has been dealing with the status quo and fighting using all means available in accordance with the international resolutions and the UN's conduct.
Hazem Al-Qassem, Hamas' spokesperson, said in a press release that Al-Ahmed's statements were manipulative and went against all national agreements which have been reached with other national powers in the reconciliation attempts. He said that his statements confirm the PA's desire to solely control the Palestinian arena, and express its disregard and disbelief of all forms of national partnerships.
He also stressed that no authority or figure has the right to deprive the Palestinian people from its right to vote.
