Netanyahu-Gantz Agreement: Will it Last?

“On Tuesday, March 31st, it would be eleven years since Benjamin Netanyahu became Prime Minister in Israel,” said Yossi Melman, Israeli analyst, on March 28th, 2020.

Analyzing his statement, it can be understood that Netanyahu has a witty political Israeli mentality, a lot similar to that of the former PM and Minister of Defense Ariel Sharon whose mentality was criminal, political and draining.

Netanyahu’s brain managed to keep him in office for eleven years without any rivals snatching victory from him. In fact, he is working on closing the bribery files he is accused of, and conducting dialogues with Palestinian movements through negotiations, which have forced Palestinians to reconsider the type of mentality they are dealing with.

Netanyahu was able to manipulate the events to his favor. For example, the Israeli opposition that is trying to bring down and remove Netanyahu, calling him a failure, was chained and prevented from achieving its claims.

Since before the 2014 war waged on the Gaza Strip, Avigdor Lieberman, who had always cursed and degraded Netanyahu, had threatened that once he became Minister of War he would give Al-Sinwar and Haniya 24 hours to whether free the Israeli prisoners or he would execute an assassination. Netanyahu made use of this statement, and appointed Lieberman Minister of Defense. However, the latter could not execute any assassination or wage any war on Gaza which made him willingly resign.

Among the Israelis, Netanyahu is described as the destroyer of politicians’ skulls. He was the one to end Ehud Barak, former Minister of War who had served the occupation for years; Tzipi Livni, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and as mentioned earlier Lieberman. Hence, Netanyahu is not just a man who wants to serve his time and move on. Instead, he wants to stay in office the way he wants, not the way the country needs.

If anything, the above-mentioned only reflects the deceiving mentality of Netanyahu. He even tried to use the same method with Naftali Bennett but Bennett did not resign. Instead, Netanyahu took him by his side so that he would join the Right Bloc and form a Right government, and if not a unity government with him as PM.

Today after 3 rounds of elections, Netanyahu is appointed the prime minister, and he can form a unity government with both the Right and Left blocs; ruling the way he had always planned and wanted.

Netanyahu’s plans which succeeded are:

  • Heading the unity government in the first round and Gantz the second. This way, Gantz would only follow the guidelines, plans and tactics Netanyahu had set.
  • Forcing Gantz to follow Netanyahu’s plans after finishing the first round of ruling, which makes the Right’s mentality the one followed in the field and thus weakening the Left to a great extent.
  • Dividing the ministries between the Right and Left (Netanyahu and Gantz respectively). While Gantz is appointed the Minister of Foreign Affairs and prime minister, Gabi Ashkenazi will be appointed the Minister of War and will be informed of any new appointments and assignments.
  • Pushing the Left Bloc away from the arena, even though it will be ruling the second term. So far, the Left failed to keep their promises to their supporters: They had said they would not join Netanyahu, or join a government that supports the Joint-List. Therefore, the Right would prevail and the Left would collapse that even if it rules alone, it would not be able to reform its structure and rule.
  • Pushing Lieberman and the position away from the arena and keeping it to himself.
  •  Forming an emergency government should they fail to form a unity government with Netanyahu a PM in the first round. This would probably close the bribery files. The entity is living an emergency due to the COVID-19, so it would be illogical to trial the PM while he is managing the crisis. Therefore, the case would be closed and thrown away, and this would be Netanyahu’s lifeboat and his door to continue working in the political field.

Although everything is going in the right direction for Netanyahu, he is now living a new nightmare: he is working with someone who betrayed his own bloc. The Left Bloc had a clear stance ‘only without Netanyahu’. Therefore, Netanyahu is now afraid of the person, Gantz, who is sharing him the ruling. Can Netanyahu win Gantz over and prevent him from betrayal?

Should Gantz follow Netanyahu’s orders, will it be for the greater good of ‘their nation’ or to push him away?

Well, Gantz will be obedient to a certain extent. However, he will work hard to topple Netanyahu and remove him from the political arena. This will be very difficult, but not impossible.

Another question always comes to mind whenever ‘Netanyahu’ is mentioned: Why is Netanyahu trying so hard to stay in office? Is it for the country’s greater good or for his personal gains?

Generally, it is in human nature to want to rule and collect a great amount of money out of political work. However, since the ‘establishment’ of the occupation’s entity, not one single politician had such mentality with similar desire. Everyone’s interest has always been protecting and developing the entity. It is deduced, however, that Netanyahu is unlike his predecessors who wished to serve their country. Instead, Netanyahu wants to keep his grip to achieve some personal gains, a lot like Arab rulers who weaken their people and then weaken their countries.

The Israeli community, which was once known to be very patriotic, now tries to present medical or psychological reports to avoid serving in the army which would threaten Israel as it is a military state. Therefore, such changes in the society would weaken and destroy it especially with the recent and ongoing events.
