Governmental Outbursts in the Inauguration Week

Jan 08, 2023 01:58 pm

Almost a week has passed since the extreme rightest government -headed by Benjamin Netanyahu- assumed its duties, yet most of its ministers released the arrows in their sleeve into all directions. They apparently do not aim to draw attention to their ability of taking unprecedented decisions, as their moves did not only provoke the Palestinian people and resistance factions, but also annoyed different segments of the Israeli society and embarrassed the Arab allies and the United States (the big sponsor). So, why such haste?

Evidently, all of those moves taken by the ministers of the Israeli occupation's new government do not proceed in one agreed context nor in the path planned by Netanyahu. They however refer to the diverse directions each partner in the governing coalition will follow. As said before, "Getting rid of Yair Lipid's government" is the main goal that all ministers agree on. In contrast to the estimations that this new government will complete its term till the end, such hasty practices predict that its age will not last much longer.

Ben Gvir's Incursion into Al-Aqsa

Undoubtedly, the break-in of Itmar Ben Gvir -Minister of the Israeli occupation's National Security- into Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa in the very first days of his mandate, neglecting all threats of the Palestinian Resistance and his bilateral agreement with Netanyahu, has constituted the most prominent event. Talking about the delay of the incursion for some weeks seemed to be just a maneuver; however, it is constant that Ben Gvir infiltrated into Al-Aqsa like thefts. Thus, his intrusion can be considered as a failed action that did not benefit the Israeli occupation at all, nor did it open the door for more Jews and officials to storm it or contributed to achieving security balance with the Palestinians. In contrast, it triggered comprehensive condemnations from the Arab world, enraged the west, and caused the delay of Netanyahu's visit to the UAE scheduled next week. Apparently, UAE joined the list of critics of the occupation and demanded the discussion of the situation of Al-Quds in the United Nations.

Ben Gvir's critics have said that "even though it is one of his powers as a Minister of National security to storm Al-Aqsa, he is not allowed to shed blood on the Israeli side." They noted that Itmar will not calm down until he pulls the Israeli government, army and citizens into a miscalculated adventure, turns 'Israel' into a pariah state, puts it in the confrontation course with the Arab nations that signed peace agreements with and with Washington and the Western nations generally, and causes the collapse of the Palestinian Authority. Ben Gvir's incursion tests the strength of relations between the minister and subordinates as well as enables him to identify the Israeli occupation's foreign policy, as he managed to confuse Netanyahu's plans to visit the UAE and Egypt.

Netanyahu will obviously face some difficulties in the UAE, as Amiera AlHafeiti, Deputy Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, demanded last August during a session in the Security Council "to press on Israel to main the current legal and historical situation in the holy places in Al-Quds and stop any work that might change the city's identity." Moreover, the UAE, during talks with Benny Gantz, former minister of the occupation army, Naftali Bennet and Yair Lapid, former presidents of the occupation government, expressed its concerns regarding the development of situations in the West Bank and Al-Quds.

Despite Netanyahu's concern about preserving the real situation in Al-Quds, Ben Gvir's statements indicate the opposite, obligating Netanyahu to confirm that the last word regarding this matter is his. He then has to impose discipline on his government's ministers and prevent them from even thinking of carrying out such provocations. Netanyahu however seems that he is no longer able to fill a stringent government stance according to his will, yet is forced to meet the demands of his partner, whom he even used to reject to take photos with them during the last electoral campaign.

It is expected that this might not be the last time the leader of Otzma Yehudit challenges Netanyahu, because Ben Gvir, raised at the hands of the terrorist Meir Kahane, is dedicated in front of his supporters to implement more and more provocative actions. His campaign also pledged to cause substantial damage to the situation of the Palestinian prisoners, probably causing the announcement of a mass hunger strike. This would therefore ignite the situations in the West Bank.

Since the inauguration of Netanyahu's 6th government, events accelerated dramatically and legal battles against him started. The General Prosecutor opposed to the appointment of Arieh Derie, Head of Shas Party, as a minister in front of the Supreme Court because of his convection. Also, Yariv Levin, Minister of Justice of the Israeli occupation, filed, in the first week of his inauguration, the first 4 articles that will be amended in the first phase of reforming the judicial system, which the human rights activists considered as "coup" against the judicial regime in the State. Moreover, Aharon Barak, former president of the Supreme Court of the Israeli occupation who was responsible for the trial of Netanyahu, observed that "Levin's plan would pose danger to the Israeli diplomacy." Within such governmental contexts tending towards more extremism, Washington's reaction to the intrusion of Ben Gvir into Al-Aqsa might be harsher than what Netanyahu and his partners in the coalition expect.
