Parts of the historic market in Hebron's center, which had been shuttered since 1983, were destroyed by illegal Israeli settlers.

According to Imad Hamdan, the director general of the Hebron Reconstruction Committee, a number of illegal settlers destroyed external arches in the old market while being guarded by the occupation forces.

According to Hamdan, the Hebron municipality received a precautionary order from the occupation court to suspend building 31 settlement units in the old market of Al-Khalil from 2017 to 2021. However, the so-called "Higher Settlement Council" permitted the construction to be finished.
