The Palestinian Authority Returns to Negotiations in Biden’s Term

Nov 19, 2020 08:49 am

The Democrat Joe Biden won the US presidential elections over the Republican Donald Trump, who presented a peace plan for the Middle East giving it a modern term and calling it ‘the Deal of the Century’. This Deal results in the suppression of the Palestinian people’s rights as Al-Quds was declared the occupation’s capital and the US embassy was moved to it.

Such actions enraged the Palestinian public which made the PA decide to stop formal security coordination, and President Abbas to threaten to withdraw from all agreements made with the Israeli occupation if the annexation plan is implemented; the plan which destroys the dream of establishing a Palestinian state on 1967 borders.

Insight of the Situation

Joe Biden presented an electoral program that promises to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East through solving the existing dispute between the Palestinian people and the Israeli occupation and seeking to establish a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, opening a US Consulate in the east side of Al-Quds and maintaining the Embassy in Al-Quds. He also confirmed resending financial aids to the UNRWA and opening an envoy office for the PLO in Washington. He, however, refuses American boycott of Israeli products; instead, he will allow the development of commercial and investment relations between his country and the Israeli occupation.

The PA embraced a safety strategy in the case of Biden’s election as president. Biden had promised that his country would sponsor peace in the Middle East, pleasing both parties. This made the PA hold on to negotiations which would negatively affect the progress of the Palestinian reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah.

Several military and political analysists agreed on PM Netanyahu speeding up the annexation before Trump’s term officially ends on January 20, 2021. Trump has been the rudest in supporting the occupation. However, this does not seem to make sense as the occupation’s political leadership is preoccupied with other crises: the Coronavirus health crisis, and the southern and northern military crisis.

Possible Scenarios:

  • Netanyahu announces Israeli sovereignty over the Palestinian lands before Trump’s term ends, which would result in the PA ending security coordination, withdrawing its recognition of the occupation, ending all agreements, and achieving Palestinian reconciliation with all parties.
  • Biden disapproves the sovereignty move and the US resumes its role as a sponsor of peace, which would hinder the Palestinian reconciliation and take the PA to negotiations with the occupation again.

The second scenario is more likely to happen because Biden seems to follow former president Obama’s policy which calls for extending negotiations with the PA.
