Dr. Ahmad Al-Farra, Head of the Pediatrics and Obstetrics Department at Nasser Medical Complex, warned of an impending “health disaster” due to a complete lack of infant formula in Gaza’s hospitals.
Dr. Al-Farra confirmed that both regular and therapeutic infant formula have not entered the Strip for the past four months. He noted that medical teams are urging mothers to rely on breastfeeding as much as possible, but this is extremely difficult given the widespread malnutrition among women, as well as the fact that many suffer from cancer and are undergoing chemotherapy, which prohibits breastfeeding.
Nasser Medical Complex receives no fewer than 10 cases daily of children suffering from severe malnutrition. However, the hospital struggles to accommodate them all due to overcrowding and limited resources.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, the number of child deaths due to malnutrition has risen to around 60.
