The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) stated that the plight of Palestine refugees is “the longest unresolved refugee crisis in the world.”
This came in a post published by the UN agency on its X (formerly Twitter) account, marking World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20.
It added: “In 1948 (during the Nakba), more than 700,000 Palestinians were displaced from their towns and villages... 77 years later, Palestinians continue to face forced displacement.”
According to UNRWA records as of August 2023, there are approximately 5.9 million registered Palestinian refugees. Of those, about 2.5 million reside in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.
