Dundee City Council voted to recognize the State of Palestine with the majority of councilors voting in favor. 23 councilors backed the decision while 3 others opposed.
The decision is considered a huge step in the British people's exercise of pressure on the British government for the recognition of Palestine. Sheffield had already recognized the state in 2019, and the House of Commons in 2014.
Dundee was one of the first cities to establish relations with Palestine. It signed a twinning agreement with Nablus in 1980 as a result to which several developmental projects were implemented, and visits were exchanged.
