Intifada on Mute in West Bank

Jun 23, 2021 02:00 pm

Israeli author Alior Levi said in his report in the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth that tension and violence are still going in different areas in the West Bank. Last May, 34 Palestinians were shot dead by the occupation which is the biggest toll in 5 years. This could lead to an 'Intifada on mute'.

He said that the attacks carried out by the Palestinians, strikes and demonstrations against the occupation's forces notably increased across the different neighborhoods of the West Bank.

Levi said that such escalation could be result of the PA's loss of legal cover after the cancellation of the elections. The public has become more pro-Hamas. The tension has also been rising in Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, especially what happened in Ramadan. These factors, and the recent war on the Gaza Strip, reinforced resistance as a choice for the youth hence intensifying the level of activities.

Levi concluded his talk explaining that the Israeli response to such escalating events is arresting more citizens in the West Bank. Most of the arrests targeted Hamas' activists or its associates.
