Return to Direct Occupation

The Government of Itmar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrić seeks to return to the first period of occupation, erase the remnants of the Oslo Accords, eliminate the presence of the Palestinian Authority and divide Palestine into areas A, B and C. In addition to that, they seek to re-bring Hebron under a direct Israeli control. Thereafter, military rulers may be appointed to issue permits for movement, work, study and car licenses.

The outlines of this plan have begun to become clear. The Government's sanctions imposed against the Palestinian Authority, which include freezing the transfer of 139 million NIS to the families of the Israeli casualties, as well as an immediate deduction of funds transferred by the Authority to the families of Palestinian prisoners and martyrs, is only the first step in pushing the PA into a situation where it cannot pay its employees.

Smotrich and Ben Gvir are hoping that the PA will have no choice but to resign. It should only be remembered that the salary crisis in Gaza was among the main factors that triggered the confrontations along the Gaza-Israel border wall, and now the West Bank is swinging on a fine rope connected to the human explosive field, as some 100 thousand of Palestinians work in Israel with work permits and thousands without them.

Ben Gvir and Smotrich have no solutions to the uprising that will break out in the wake of the restriction movement they use against the PA. Then the occupation army will have to devote most of its troops to control West Bank and Al-Quds. Temporary closure will be an integral part of reality until a complete and lasting lockdown is imposed such as the closure and blockade of Gaza. Israeli citizens will discover that they cannot continue to travel to Europe and possibly also to the United States. Moreover, the Israeli goods are no longer desirable in the world and they find themselves live in a cage.
