13 Years After Mavi Marmara Massacre

May 31, 2023 01:46 pm

Today, Wednesday, marks the 13th commemoration of the massacre committed by the “Israeli” occupation naval forces on the Freedom Flotilla in 2010, notably on the deck of the Turkish “Mavi Marmara” ship while it was en route to end the Gaza blockade.

Six international non-governmental organizations, the most significant of which was the Turkish Humanitarian Relief Foundation (iHH), decided to take the initiative to break the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip by deploying a naval flotilla to it, which led to the launch of the siege-breaking ships.

The Turkish “Mavi Marmara” was one of the ships in the flotilla of freedom, holding more than 500 activists and supporters, the majority of whom were Turkish, as well as three other ships from the European campaign to break the blockade imposed on Gaza.

On May 31, 2010, Israeli naval commandos attacked the Mavi Marmara, one of the flotilla's most significant ships, while it was in international waters. They fired bullets and tear gas canisters, at the people on the ships. Hence, the flotilla was unable to reach the Gaza Strip, leading to the deaths of 10 persons and the injuries of 56 others, the majority of whom were Turkish.
