Ahmad Naeem, Director of Sheikh Hamad Hospital for Rehabilitation and Prosthetics in Gaza, confirmed that the hospital is facing increasing pressure due to the rising number of injuries resulting from the ongoing Israeli war.
Naeem explained that the war has led to a sharp rise of over 225% in limb amputation cases, with more than 6,500 new amputations recorded since the beginning of the aggression, compared to around 2,000 cases before October 2023.
He pointed out that the hospital’s annual capacity does not exceed the production of 150 prosthetic limbs, meaning that dealing with the current numbers would take more than 20 years unless capabilities are expanded.
The hospital administration is aiming to increase production to 400–500 prosthetics annually, but the Israeli blockade is preventing the entry of essential materials needed for this. Naeem also noted that the number of specialized personnel is very limited and is working under extreme pressure, with ongoing efforts to train local talent and attract technical support from abroad to strengthen the workforce.
