Human rights organizations in “Israel” informed the UN Committee Against Torture that Israel has escalated its violations of the Convention Against Torture.
The organizations said in a report submitted to the committee that “Israel carries out acts of torture and abuse at all stages of detention and by all security forces involved in imprisonment, with approval from high-level officials and without judicial or administrative oversight, and with the involvement of medical staff.”
The report explained that the occupation labels Palestinian detainees as “unlawful combatants,” giving authorities justification to hold Palestinians for prolonged periods without trial and without granting them the rights afforded to prisoners of war.
According to the report, prisoners were subjected to degrading treatment, severe restrictions, and harsh conditions, including deprivation of basic needs, physical abuse, and exposure to extremely harmful practices during interrogations and detention.
The report stressed that the fate of hundreds of detainees from Gaza remains unknown, and that many Palestinian prisoners are held in solitary confinement, denied access to lawyers, Red Cross representatives, journalists, and even their families.
