'Lawn Mowing' Strategy in West Bank

Sep 29, 2021 11:40 am

Last Sunday, the Israeli occupation forces launched a series of military operations and night break-ins against several villages and towns in the Occupied West Bank. As a result, five Palestinians were killed and twenty others were arrested. Israeli occupation's security sources reported that it seized 5 shotguns that belong to the Palestinian Resistance in the West Bank. Moreover, Palestinian security and medical sources announced that the occupation's forces have been holding four bodies of those five Palestinian martyrs till now.

The factions of the Palestinian Resistance proclaimed that the five Palestinians who were killed that night belong to Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements. Hence, the Israeli occupation claimed that they were aiming at captivating Israeli settlers and soldiers to exchange them with Palestinian prisoners, and planning to implement a martyrdom operation inside the occupied Palestinian lands. Moreover, it claimed that those cells are being run and funded by the Palestinian Resistance inside and outside Gaza.

The Israeli occupation confirmed that its military operations that are concentrated in Al-Quds, Jenin, and Ramallah are a result of the campaign of arrests it launched a week ago. It claimed that it could obtain significant information about those Palestinian cells. Thus, this had led it to implement its operations all at once through special commando units such as Al-Yamam, Al-Yasam, and Al-Duvdevan to bury any attempts of carrying out operations against the occupation.

Analysis and Insight:

  • The state of resistance in the occupied West Bank is sustained and sustainable. From one phase to another, it might be affected by the state of security coordination between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli occupation, and the intensity of the Israeli occupation's security efforts.
  • The Israeli occupation has been practicing the 'lawn mowing' strategy since Operation 'Defensive Shield' in 2002, which targeted all areas of the West Bank, and the infrastructure of the Palestinians Resistance.
  • The Israeli occupation fears the rise in the power of the Palestinian Resistance in the West Bank, as it might endanger its existence in the city.
  • Through its arbitrary operations and use of excessive force, the Israeli occupation seeks to consolidate a robust policy against the Palestinians in the West Bank that hinders their national, resistant path.
  • The Palestinian Resistance inside and outside Gaza is aware that the West Bank is an effective destination the Israeli occupation fears. It might change the face of the Palestine-Israel conflict in case it adopted the resistance work. This interest emerged a while ago, and has escalated lately, especially after Operation 'Al-Quds Sword.'
  • As Jenin is a fertile ground for resistance work, the Israeli occupation has always failed to take control over the town's people's supportive beliefs of resistance. Thus, the fire of the Intifada against the occupation always ignites from Jenin.

Situation Report:

Based on the abovementioned, the expected scenarios could be as following:

  1. The Israeli occupation's security and military operations might continue against any attempts to build a system for the acts of resistance in the West Bank. It will also kill, arrest and deter any Palestinian that would take the path leading to that system.
  2. The Israeli occupation might fail to control the Palestinian Resistance in the West Bank. Its force might become more powerful; thus, all scales of deterrence and control will be changed in the city.

Generally, the first scenario is more likely to realize as it is apparently present nowadays and in the upcoming days. What supports this scenario is that the West Bank enjoys a significant strategic location, interrelations with others cities and settlements, forming the basis of the Israeli demographic population, and big security and intelligence work between the Israeli occupation and the Palestinian Authority, led by Abbas. Hence, the Israeli occupation well realizes the difference that might grow by the rise in the power of the resistance's forces in the West Bank.
