Future of the Israeli Attacks against the Palestinian Prisoners

Feb 23, 2022 10:01 am

The Israeli occupation forces and Israel Prison Service continue to practice repressive policies against the Palestinian prisons inside the prisons in light of the collective punishment policy and the state of alert that invaded the prisons after the 'Freedom Tunnel' Operation. Their violent procedures range between repression, transformation, inspection, closure of sections, limitation of the time allowed to let them go out to the yard, and the like.

Besides its punitive and provocative measures, the Israeli occupation continues to issue administrative detentions against the prisoners without enabling them to practice their legal right to having fair trials.

On the other side, the prisoner leadership in the Israeli prisons has many times warned of launching escalating steps to force the Israeli occupation to retreat from its racist procedures. Recently, it has dissolved the infrastructure of the prisoners and stopped the organizational work inside the prisons. Furthermore, the sick prisoners refused to receive their medicine while other administrative detainees have been boycotting the occupation's courts for more than 50 days, in protest of the Israeli practices.

The Palestinian prisoners confirm that they will keep moving further ahead in their protest initiatives until their demands; represented in cancelling all sanctions and violations practiced against them by the Israel Prison Service and ending the policy of administrative detention, are achieved. In addition, the prisoners hold the Israeli occupation responsible for any repercussions that might result from the state of friction and the accompanying protest steps started by the prisoners.

Analysis and Insight of the Scene

  • The issue of prisoners is a national cause that matters all the Palestinians, and a main cause in the Palestinian struggle.
  • The Israeli occupation realizes how sensitive the issue of prisoners is for all the Palestinian people and factions. Thus, it fears to pressure the prisoners more, lest the situations become more tense and the confrontations trigger again with Gaza and the West Bank.
  • The Israeli occupation doubles its repressive policies against the Palestinian prisons. Even though those policies are a daily routine inside the prisons, the increase in those practices following the 'Freedom Tunnel' Operation has annoyed the prisoners.
  • Those repressive Israeli measures against the prisoners in the Israeli prisons come within the context of a mental deterrence and a collective punishment against the prisoners.
  • The issue of the administrative detention is a clear violation of the international humanitarian law and the right to having a fair trial. It is one of the violent practices that violate the Palestinian prisoners' rights.
  • The Israeli occupation adopts a general strategy that depends on pressing on the Palestinian prisoners while taking care not to increase the tension and avoid any chance to starting a confrontation in order to maintain the vulnerable stability of the Israeli political system and to commit to America's desire to calm the situations in the region.

Expected Scenarios: Based on the abovementioned, following is the expected:

  1. The Israeli occupation might continue to press on the prisoners with an eye not to lead the prisoners to break out. However, there is still a possibility of occurring individual operations by the prisoners against the prisons' administration in light of the end of the organizational work. This scenario is supported by the Israeli occupation's desire not to contribute to breaking out the situations in the prisons.
  2. The Israeli occupation might continue to practice its repressive measures against the prisoners, increasing the tensions inside the prisons and encouraging the prisoners for more strikes and rebellions.

In general, it is probable that the Israeli occupation might continue in its repressive measures against the prisoners in the upcoming period while maintaining the ability to return to the calm state inside the prisons. It deliberately seeks to show a state of deterrence and strength in dealing with the prisoners.
