On Friday, 5 August 2022, the Israeli occupation warplanes unleashed a wave of attacks against the Gaza Strip, assassinating the leader of the Islamic Jihad Movement Taysir Al-Jaabari. By the end of this three-day offensive, 49 civilians were martyred and 360 others were injured.

How Did It Start?

This brutal aggression was preceded by several prefaces that indicate the outbreak of an escalation soon, most alarmingly the detention of Bassam Al-Saadi, the leader of the Islamic Jihad in the West Bank, and the deteriorating health condition of the hunger striking prisoner Khalil Awawda. This triggered the Islamic Jihad to send warning messages. The Israeli occupation therefore announced a state of alert along Gaza envelope and closed Erez and Karem Abu Salem border crossings.

In the afternoon of that Friday, the Israeli occupation warplanes targeted Al-Jaabari in his apartment in the middle of Gaza, assassinating him, killing a number of citizens and destroying several neighboring residential apartments. As the bombing continued, the Islamic Jihad movement had to respond by launching a series of rockets on the cities and towns of the Occupied Interior.

Offensive's Consequences
The three-day offensive resulted in 49 Palestinians killed -including 1 elderly, 17 children, 3 females and 28 males, and 360 others injured -including 20 elderlies, 59 females, 151 children and 130 males.

Statistics also present that 2000 residential units were affected due to the Israeli bombing -20 units were completely destroyed and 80 others were partially damaged.

The suffering of the Gazans became more worse due to the stoppage of the power plant during the offensive and the closure of border crossings for days. In this regard, the Ministry of Health, warned of the catastrophic repercussions of the Israeli occupation's ongoing attacks against the Strip amid the shortage of medicine and medical equipment

Ceasefire
The Egyptian diplomatic efforts that were being exerted along the offensive led to reaching a ceasefire under the following conditions: to stop the Israeli military operation and release the hunger striking prisoner Khalil Awawda.

Observing the general political situation, the status in the field and the Israeli military activities, it is unexpected that the confrontation would occur again, at least in the upcoming period, as the mentioned circumstances do not serve the start of a new escalation.
