The Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, noted in a virtual video briefing to the UN Security Council that the situation of Palestine refugees has deteriorated further since the Council's last briefing in May 2021.
He said that more than 80 percent of Palestine refugees in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza live below the poverty line, and noted that sixty families of Palestine refugees lost their homes, 17 children were children, eight of whom were students at UNRWA schools, during the recent occupation aggression against the Gaza Strip.
He emphasized that half of UNRWA's students were traumatized and needed special assistance to deal with repeated rounds of violence and the economic difficulties of their families.
Regarding West Bank and Jerusalem, refugees suffer from high levels of expropriation, violence and insecurity.
