The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that the Israeli occupation is set to deny 800 Palestinian children their right to education as six of its schools in occupied East Jerusalem face imminent closure.
Roland Friedrich, Director of UNRWA Affairs in the West Bank, stated:
“In less than 10 days, closure orders issued by Israeli officials against six UNRWA schools in Jerusalem will take effect.”
On October 28, 2024, the Israeli Knesset passed two laws by a large majority banning UNRWA from operating within Israeli-controlled areas, stripping it of all privileges and official recognition. These laws officially came into effect at the end of January 2025.
