Azzam Al-Ahmad, member in the Executive Committee of the PLO and Fatah, said to ‘Today’s File’ (Malaf Al-Yum) program on Palestine TV that the Cairo meeting had failed in the first ten minutes.
He said that the atmosphere was tense after the meeting due to an argument that had risen between Jibril Rajoub and Saleh Al-Arouri.
Egypt’s representative said in the meeting, “Have you come to announce your failure here and your success in Istanbul?”
Al-Ahmad said that a phone call was made between Rajoub and Al-Arouri; the latter confirmed Hamas’ agreement on holding the elections. In the meeting, however, he said that the vast majority of Hamas voted against the elections.
Al-Ahmad then said that Hamas attributed the failure of the dialogue to the PA’s resumption of coordination with the Israeli occupation.
However, the failure of the dialogue was on November 15, and the resumption of coordination was on November 17. He stressed on how the ball is now in Hamas’ court.
Al-Ahmad added that the factions do not believe Hamas’ talk on Fatah’s opposition of the Secretaries General meeting, and that everything that has recently happened was due to the ‘Deal of the Century’ and the resulting session of the Central Board to face the challenges of the new phase.
He also stressed that the PLO is the only official representative of the Palestinian people.
On the Executive Committee that was formed, Al-Ahmad said that it addressed the holding of elections, the Coronavirus issue, activation of the PLO and strengthening of relations with other factions.
As for resuming relations with the USA, he said that Joe Biden will reopen the PLO’s office in Washington and the US Consulate in the eastern side of occupied Al-Quds.
