Matthias Schmale, Director of UNRWA Operations in Gaza, said during a press release held in the UNRWA headquarter in Gaza that some states, capitals and Zionist organizations are working to terminate UNRWA's work and integrate it to the UNHCR through publishing false information and circulating facts out of their true context.
Schmale pointed out to how some allege that UNRWA supports violence inside the schools as the Institute for Israel Studies “Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education" attacked the Palestinian curricula taught at UNRWA schools saying they incited violence.
He also expressed his respect to the current curricula taught at the schools, and rejected any omission of the PA’s syllabus.
Schmale said that the number of refugees is increasing in the Gaza Strip which requires an increase in the services. He called for donor countries to increase their support in order to maintain the level of essential services offered to the refugees. The deficit in Gaza, he stressed, would prevent any development in the services.
UNRWA has been facing a massive budget deficit ever since former US President Donald Trump stopped America's donations and support for the agency in August 2018. The value of the budget was $360 million annually which constituted half of its budget. Also, the donor countries decreased their support which led to reducing the UNRWA's services in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan; and to laying off hundreds of employees.
