Escalation in Sheikh Jarrah and Israeli Prisons: Would it Reach Gaza?

Feb 16, 2022 11:14 am

The extremist Zionist movements, led by Itmar Ben Gvir, have renewed their break-ins into Al-Quds since last Sunday, causing clashes among the Jerusalemites and the colonial settlers who raided Sheikh Jarrah with protection from the occupation police. Ben Gvir put up a tent on a Palestinian land as a parliamentarian office, increasing the tension in the neighborhood.

The clashes were triggered under the pretext of burning a settler's house built on a Palestinian land. In light of the calls released by the settlers against Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, the Israeli occupation attacked the Jerusalemites with sound bombs and gas canisters, arrested 9 Palestinians, and injured more than 3 others. The Israeli occupation army also demolished a house in Silat al-Harithiya and launched a campaign of arrests along the West Bank.

In parallel with the developments in Al-Quds and West Bank, the Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli prisons announced their determination to expand their escalation steps to face the decisions of the administrative detention. About 500 administrative prisoners have been boycotting the occupation courts for 50 days in a row in order to end the policy of administrative detention imposed on them.

Analysis and Insight of the Scene

  • The Israeli occupation and the extremist settlers continue their Judaizational endeavors towards Al-Quds and its neighborhoods in order to create a fait accompli and actual existence on the field.
  • The Judaization and Intimidation efforts practiced by the settlers go in parallel with an Israeli governmental official cover ranging between demolition, seizure and evacuation in a way that is fully integrated with the settlers' efforts.
  • The West Bank lives a state of tension due to the occupation's and settlers' practices to suffocate the Jerusalemites in specific, and the West Bank families in general.
  • The Israeli prisons witness a state of convulsion as a result of the Israeli occupation court's continuity in suppressing the Palestinian prisoners' rights and the continuity of the administrative detention policy, which violates all international laws and convections.
  • The Israeli occupation leaders realize the sensitivity of the current situations in Al-Quds and the prisoners' cause, and the possibility that it triggers a huge escalation in all points of friction between the Palestinians and the occupation, including Gaza.
  • It is noticeable that there is a conflict in the Zionist official orientations towards Al-Quds. At the time the extremist Itmar Ben Gvir practices his activities with a support by the Likud Party, we find a state of rage by PM Neftali Bennett, Yair Lapid; his minister of foreign Affairs, and Omar Barlev, who ordered the police officers to kick Ben Gvir from Sheikh Jarrah.
  • The disparate escalating shootings in the West Bank indicate a state of possible escalation that might happen in the West Bank, and the possibility that the clashes get wider.
  • The Israeli occupation leaders consider the Palestinian Resistance's threats in case the settlers go far in their violations. This appears in the state of reluctance shown by several leaders towards the escalation.

Situation Report

Based on the aforementioned, the expected scenarios can be as follows:

  1. The official and unofficial Israeli practices in Al-Quds and the Israeli prisons might escalate the confrontations in a way that triggers all points of friction, including Gaza. This scenario is supported by the sensitivity of the cause of Al-Quds and prisoners, and the continuous efforts of the Palestinian Resistance to consolidate new rules of confrontation curbing the occupation's practices against Al-Quds and the prisoners.
  2. The Zionist practices might be limited to Al-Quds and the West Bank. What supports this scenario is the prudence of the Resistance and the practice of efforts that do not amount to the confrontation with the Israeli occupation.

Generally, it is expected that the Palestinian Resistance will continue in exerting pressure on the Israeli occupation, through the mediators and the harsh popular means of resistance, with the possibility to enter a military escalation in case the occupation did not respond to the occupation's threats to stop their attacks on Al-Quds and the Israeli prisons.
