Today is the second anniversary of six Palestinian prisoners achieving freedom out of the Israeli Gilboa prison by using basic metal tools to dig a tunnel from their cells, which took nine months. This operation dealt a deep challenge to the Israeli security apparatus and shocked the world.
Mahmoud Al-Arada, Mohammed Al-Arada, Ayham Kamamji, Ya'qub Qadri, Zakaria Al-Zubaidi, and Monadel Enafeat were the six prisoners that were able to escape through the tunnel. They were all from Jenin, a city in the occupied West Bank.
The "Freedom Tunnel" operation was widely hailed by the Palestinians, who rejoiced in the prisoners’ triumph with celebrations in several cities. However, the occupying forces repeatedly detained the six prisoners within two weeks of the operation.
