Heavy rainfall in the early hours of Tuesday caused flooding in the tents of displaced people across the Gaza Strip, with hundreds of tents blown away, as a stormy low-pressure system has been affecting the area since Monday evening.
Rainwater also leaked into parts of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, particularly the reception and emergency department, leading to a disruption of services.
Hundreds of thousands of residents in Gaza are facing these tragic conditions while living in fragile, makeshift tents, with a severe lack of basic necessities such as blankets and winter clothing to protect them and their children from the harsh rain and winter cold.
The situation of displaced people continues to deteriorate amid the deep low-pressure system, heavy rainfall, and strong winds.
Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defense, warned that thousands of homes partially destroyed during the Israeli genocide are at risk of collapsing at any moment due to the rain and strong winds.
Basal said, “These homes pose a serious threat to the lives of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who have no shelter. We have repeatedly warned the world, but to no avail.”
The Palestinian Meteorological Department expected the country to remain affected by the low-pressure system on Tuesday, with a drop in temperatures and partially cloudy, cold conditions, especially in mountainous areas.
Scattered rain showers are expected over most areas and may be accompanied at times by thunderstorms and hail. During the evening and night hours, the chance of rainfall will decrease. Winds will be southeasterly to northwesterly at moderate speed, and the sea will be moderate in wave height.
In the evening and night, the weather will remain partially cloudy and cold, with a continued chance of light, scattered rain over some areas. Winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly at moderate speed, and the sea will be moderate.
On Wednesday, the weather will be partially cloudy with a further drop in temperatures, remaining cold, especially over mountainous areas.
The Meteorological Department also forecast scattered rain showers in some areas, particularly in the south, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms at times until midday. Winds will be northwesterly to northeasterly at moderate speed, occasionally active, and the sea will be moderate.
Citizens were warned during the low-pressure system of the risk of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, especially in southern and eastern regions, slippery roads, reduced horizontal visibility, and low temperatures.
Weather observer Asim Asayda had also warned of renewed flood risks in the Gaza Strip starting Monday due to a cold low-pressure system.
